United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar Tomas Ojea Quintana
Yangon, August 24 -- On the fourth day of his five-day official visit to Myanmar, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar Tomas Ojea Quintana held one and a half hour talks with democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi at her residence this afternoon.
Asked by newsmen who surrounded Quintana and Aung San Suu Kyi, the democracy icon said: “I am very much satisfied with my talks with Mr. Quintana. I look upon him as a dependable person with sincere goodwill for promotion of human rights in Myanmar.”
As for Mr. Quintana, he reserved his comments on his talks with Aung San Suu Kyi as well as on the results of his five-day mission for the press conference he will be giving tomorrow evening at the Yangon International Airport before departing Myanmar.
Since his appointment to the post of United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar in May 2008, Quintana has previously come here three times – the first time in August 2008, second time in February 2009 and the third time in February 2010.
In all these three previous visits, Quintana was barred from seeing Aung San Suu Kyi by the previous military government. Thus this is the first time Quintana has the chance to hold talks with Aung San Suu Kyi.
On arrival in Nay Pyi Taw on the first day of his visit on August 21 this year, Quintana was cordially received by Myanmar Foreign Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin.
The state media said Quintana and Wunna Maung Lwin held talks discussing progress of improvement of human rights in Myanmar.
The same day he was received by Minister for Home Affairs Lt-Gen Ko Ko, who happens to be the Chairman of the Myanmar Human Rights Committee.
On his second day of his visit on August 22, Quintana has met and separately held talks with Chief Justice U Tun Tun Oo, Attorney-General U Tun Shin, Minister for Labour U Aung Kyi, Minister for Defence Maj-Gen Hla Min.
The next day on August 23, Quintana separately met and held talks with Speaker of Pyithu Hluttaw Thura U Shwe Mann and Speaker of Amyotha Hluttaw U Khin Aung Myint. Quintana also met and held talks with chairmen of various parliamentary committees.
Political observers here commented that the way Quintana was eagerly received by the authorities of Thein Sein government contrasted with the way he was not warmly received by the previous military government.

“Following this one hour talks, Aung San Suu Kyi accompanied by U Khun Thar Myint and her personal assistant Daw Su Su Lwin met Daw Khin Khin Win, wife of the President and President’s grand daughter at the President Residence in Nay Pyi Taw,” U Khun Thar Myint told @@ adding that this fifteen minutes meeting was entirely devoted to familiarizing the democracy icon with the President family.
Khun Thar Myint described the 15-minute meeting, which he attended as “very cordial in a friendly atmosphere.”
However so Khun Thar Myint said he had no knowledge of what the President and democracy icon talked for one hour.
Khun Thar Myint added that Aung San Suu Kyi is due to stop over for the night in Nay Pyi Taw as special guest of the government.
For Aung San Suu Kyi ( 66 ), who have all along demanded for dialogue with the Head of State for several years as part of her efforts to achieve national reconciliation with the ruling government, her desire for such a dialogue has now been fulfilled though nobody knows yet what the President and Nobel Laureate talked about during one hour.

In response to the official invitation to attend a national level Workshop on Reforming Economic Development, which is to be held in Nay Pyi Taw for three days beginning from this afternoon, democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi left for Nay Pyi Taw by government car this morning.
This will be her first visit to Nay Pyi Taw, the administrative capital of the government, ever since she was released from six years detention on November 13 last year.
Since this workshop will be attended by officials of the current government headed by President U Thein Sein, Aung San Suu Kyi will be meeting President U Thein Sein for the first time.
After inaugurating this three-day workshop, President Thein Sein is expected to hold crucial talks with Aung San Suu Kyi regarding his government’s latest initiative for achieving peace with ethnic armed organizations, with which Myanmar military is engaged in armed conflicts.
Thein Sein government yesterday evening issued a peace overture to these ethnic armed organizations inviting them to hold peace talks with the government as the current armed clashes with them have become the biggest stumbling block for the government in its pursuit of developing national economy.
It appears that Thein Sein government is trying to enlistAung San Suu Kyi’s help in bringing these ethnic armed organizations to the negotiating table.
According to NLD sources, on her trip to Nay Pyi Taw by government car Aung San Suu Kyi was accompanied by her personal assistant Daw Su Su Lwin ( daughter of NLD CEC member U Lwin ) and her chief security officer U Khun Thar Myint.
The three-day national level Workshop on Reforming Economic Development will be held in the Myanmar International Convention Centre in Nay Pyi Taw.
Three representatives from each of the 37 political parties that had contested in the 2010 election have been invited to the workshop. Quite a number of well known businessmen from each of the 14 states or regions have also been invited to attend.

Suu Kyi, Burmese gov’t agree to work together to avoid conflicting views
Friday, 12 August 2011 19:53 Te Te
New Delhi (Mizzima) – Burma’s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and a government representative, Minister Aung Kyi, on Friday agreed in a four-point statement to avoid conflicting views and to work on a reciprocal basis.
It was the second meeting this year between the minister and Suu Kyi at a government guesthouse in Rangoon.
Aung San Suu Kyi and Minister Aung Kyi following their second meeting in Rangoon. Photo: Mizzima
The meeting lasted 50 minutes. After the meeting, Aung Kyi read a joint statement to reporters.
The statement's four points are:
1. Will cooperate with the government for stability and development in the country to fulfill the necessary aspirations of the people.
2. Will cooperate constructively for the flourishing of democracy in the country and better development in economic and social works.
3. Will avoid conflicting views and focus on mutual cooperation.
4. Will continue the meetings.
Responding to a reporter’s question on whether there had been real progress in the meetings, Suu Kyi said, “If there is cooperation, there must be progress in ethnic affairs and all other things including the media.”
Responding to an open letter sent by Suu Kyi to the newly formed government and ethnic armed groups calling for a nationwide cease-fire, Aung Kyi said, “This is one of the agendas under our cooperation.”
He said, “Cooperation is badly needed in our country, and it is a major issue. If we can resolve this issue, other issues will be resolved more easily.”
Aung Kyi is the minister of social welfare, relief and resettlement. He and democratic opposition leader Suu Kyi met previously on July 25. At that meeting, both sides said their talks were productive, but they did not disclose details of the meeting.
Three days after that meeting, Suu Kyi issued an open letter calling for peace between the government and ethnic armed groups. Similarly, she issued a statement on Thursday expressing her concerns over the building of Myitsone Dam on the Irrawaddy River in eastern Burma.
Burma observers said it is apparent that the government has made a decision to reach out to Suu Kyi in an effort to use her influence and prestige in connection with serious issues that face Burma, including poverty, a civil war, a stagnant economy, currency concerns, the environment and other matters.
On the other hand, some observers said the government might be trying to compromise Suu Kyi’s autonomy and soften her criticism of the government and the former military leadership.
Currently, Burma is seeking the chair of Asean for 2014 even as there are calls from the international community for a UN Commission of Inquiry to investigate charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity against the former military regime.
Among the concerns that Suu Kyi has repeatedly addressed is the immediate release of all political prisoners in Burmese jails, which now number more than 2,000 prisoners.

'88 Generation Students' Leaders Welcome Suu Kyi, Aung Kyi Talks
Imprisoned dissidents who are leaders of the 88 Generation Students group reportedly welcomed the recent meeting between pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and Aung Kyi, Burma's minister of labor as well as minister of social welfare, relief and resettlement, and urged more pro-active dialogue aimed at national reconciliation.
Min Ko Naing, Ko Ko Gyi and Htay Kywe, all of whom are serving 65-year priosn sentences, managed to get their comments to the public one week after the first meeting between Suu Kyi and a member of Burma's new government took office in late March.
Min Ko Naing, who is being held in Keng Tung Prison in eastern Shan State, said through an information channel that he thinks the meeting between Suu Kyi and Aung Kyi was “a good step.”
A message from Ko Ko Gyi, who is in Mong Set Prison in Shan State, said he supports the meeting and calls for more meaningful dialogue. Ko Ko Kyi, who is described by colleagues as a “strategist,” said that the pro-democracy leader should take a wider leading role in the development of democracy and peace in Burma.
Htay Kywe’s brother-in-law, Pyo Min Thein, who is also member of the 88 Generation Students group, told The Irrawaddy on Thursday that Htay Kywe said the meeting between Suu Kyi and Aung Kyi was a positive step. Htay Kywe is serving his sentence in Buthitaung Prison, Arakan State.
“Even though the 88 Generation Students leaders have sacrificed a lot for the country, they are always optimistic. Therefore our party take their concerns seriously,” said Win Htain, one of Suu Kyi’s close aides at the National League for Democracy(NLD), in response to the 88 Generation Students leaders’ messages.
The 88 Generation Students group was formed by former student leaders who led the mass uprising against dictator Ne Win’s Burmese Socialist Programme Party in the summer of 1988, during which at least 3,000 people were killed by government security forces.
Throughout 1988-1991, most of the student leaders were arrested and given long prison sentences. Min Ko Naing was arrested in 1989 and spent 15 years in prison. Ko Ko Gyi was arrested in 1991 and imprisoned and released in 2005.
After their release, the former student leaders formed the 88 Generation Students group, which became a prominent dissident movement while Suu Kyi was under house arrest. The group undertook various political activities until its leaders were once again arrested on August 21, 2007 for their involvement in a protest march against fuel price hikes and given matching 65-year sentences.
The former student leaders reportedly take the same position—that they will not make an appeal to get individual sympathy from the government.

We support Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Dialogue, Peace & National Reconciliation In Burma
(03 Aug 2011)
Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) welcomes Daw Aung San Suu Kyi calls for Peace in Burma and we will work whatever we can supporting her leadership and implementing her vision of the peaceful prosperous progress Burma.
To show our support for her leadership and to commemorate 8.8.88 mass uprising in Burma, Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) will hold the demonstration calling for dialogue leading towards national reconciliation in Burma.
Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) together with justice loving people around the world will work restlessly to free all our dissident prisoners as well as restoring peace in Burma. At the same time, we will work, without wavering, under the leadership of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
For the sake of the people, for the sake of the peace and stability in the region, our legitimate leaders led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi are working their best with full dedication, determination and devotion to take place dialogue which we believe the best possible solution for the Burma crisis. We, Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) and justice loving people around the world believe that we will definitely achieve our destination establishing a democratic peaceful, progress and prosperous Burma.
The 8th August 2011 is 23rd anniversary of the 8.8.88 mass uprising in Burma in which more than 3000 peaceful demonstrators are brutally gunned down by the military. This is very important mile stone event in Burma's recent history and it also proved that if we have the faith in what we are doing then we can move the mountains.
It also proved that the domino effect is, in fact, right since it started as the fight between students and youths in March 1988 in Insein, Rangoon which was then turning out to be the triggering point happening the mass uprising on 8th August 1988 resulting in toppling General Ne Win's totalitarian regime which had been ruling Burma with iron-grip for 26 years.
Students led the Burmese people calling for restoring democracy, human rights and rule of law in Burma. Military at that time couldn't resist the people’s collective aspiration for democracy in Burma but to hold election in 1990 in which Daw Aung San Suu Kyi led National League for Democracy (NLD) won landslide but the junta ignore to honor it.
People of Burma are still suffering, after 23 years on, but we won't forget the fallen heroes who sacrifice their lives in our struggle for democracy in Burma. In order to remember our fallen heroes of 8.8.88 mass massacre in Burma and to support Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s call for peace in Burma, Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) together with youths, students, religious leaders, ethnics people and democratic activists will join hands together holding the demonstration on 8th August 2011 (Monday) from 13:00-14:00 in front of the Burmese Embassy in London, UK and the address is 19A Charles Street, Mayfair, London, W1J 5DX.
Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) would like to call for all the people around the world to support taking place the dialogue in Burma leading towards national reconciliation. Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) firmly believes that only dialogue is the best possible answer for the national reconciliation process in Burma.
We have the very concrete reasons why we choose this path – working to take place dialogue in Burma. When we consider the Burma crisis to find the best possible solution we consider the facts that firstly the lives of the people of Burma, secondly lessons from past history, then thirdly we consider the geo-politics of Burma and eventually fourthly we consider the global politics.
When we consider the geo-politics, Burma shares the border with China, Laos, Thailand, Bangladesh, and India. In the East and North-East, Burma shares the border with China which is closely monitoring Burma waiting for the right time and right excuse so as to exploit Burma's natural and human resources. One of the easily can be seen China’s sneeze effecting Burma is its one child policy. As the result, Burma's poor are effecting for some serious extent, especially poor Burmese women. They are forcefully became the victims of human traffickers to be sold as the sex slaves for the over populated Chinese men who are buying wives or sex-slaves who are routinely facing torture, domestic and sexual abuses at the hands of the brutal Chinese husbands and relatives, at the hands of the sex brokers and/or at the hands of the human traffickers.
While we are working to restore democracy, human rights and rule of law in Burma fighting against military dictatorship systems and totalitarian regimes, and at the same time we also must be very vigilant of the China's slow and silent invasion in Burma. When we look at Burma’s economic perspective, China and Chinese businessmen control almost all of the Burma’s economics with the blessing of successive military regimes. Even if only one grip of China tightening the belt of its business in Burma could Burma’s economic industry laterally standstill leading towards food crisis, economic crisis and financial crisis which is really alarming of China’s economic colony in Burma.
Some reported that Burma’s juntas allow China to use her islands as the China’s naval watch posts in the Indian Ocean. China is building the gas-pipe line from Arakan State west of Burma straight to China exporting Burma's gas and oil. We are very much concerned that energy hungry China army could be rolling into Burma any time soon by giving excuses that it could safe-guard its pipe-line security. Our concerns for China’s army ghost threatening Burma’s security are escalating when we have learnt the news reporting that China army is allegedly building its new army bases near to Burma’s border.
When we look at what is currently happening in South China Sea dispute, we could see China's aggressive and bullying nature towards its weaker and smaller neighbors. Hence, Burma shares the border with China and since it has been unwisely favored by successive Burma's dictators, and now it is down to us to be much more vigilant of China's true nature towards Burma. Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) and Burmese people would love to co- exist with China as the good neighboring friend but at the same time we must also be vigilant that it could also be bitter foe.
When we look at India in the north-west of Burma's border, the world largest democracy country is putting her own interest first rather than democratic values. Based on her Look East policy, India cares more to power balance towards its historic rival China's influence on Burma.
When we look at East, Burma shares the border with Laos. Golden Triangle is notorious for its drugs trafficking, drugs factories and armed gangs. It is said that most of the use of the heroine use in world come from Golden Triangle which is really reminding us the history of the opium wars in China.
When we look at East and South-East of Burma, while Burmese people can stay in Refugees camps and for some extent, migrant workers can work for Thai factories and industries as the cheap labors but they are facing in constant insecurity due to the bullying and harassment of Thai authorities and Thai businessmen. Even some under aged Burmese boys and girls are sold to be used as the sex workers or/and child labors.
When we look at west of Burma, we share the border with Bangladesh which is one-fourth the size of Burma overcrowded with having four times the size of Burma's population. Due to poverty, political instabilities and religious radicalizations, it seems like a time bomb waiting to be exploded which could affect regionally as well as globally. Burma would affect more since overcrowded Bangladeshis population could cross the border resettling inside Burma which could spark radical, racial and religious tension between original inhabitants, Arakanese Buddhists, and intruding immigrants Bengalis Muslims.
In order to build the peaceful prosperous progress Burma, we must have common position amongst all parties concerned by putting national interest first. By viewing above scenarios of Burma’s geo-politics, which are all only the tips of the ice-Bergs, then it could be questionable that could Burma really count on her neighbors in her quest for democracy in Burma.
When we look at the United Nations, it seems that UN is nothing but a paper tiger. It seems powerless in the face of veto wielding five super powers; USA, UK, France, China & Russia. China and Russia will mostly always be playing power games for their own interest. They would most possibly and probably block whatever the initiatives taken by US, UK or/and France which could paralyze the abilities of three UNSC super powers.
When we look at global politics
The basis of our governments being the opinion of the people, the very first object should be to keep that right; and were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter. But I should mean that every man should receive those papers and be capable of reading them.

An invasion of armies can be resisted, but there is no resistance to an invasion of ideas. – Victor Hugo (Comment: Let truth be the invader … let facts be the bullets that slay every fallacy … because all that is false, and all that rests on what is false - including governments – is a house of cards that cannot stand.)
It is 30 years since we started this work. Activities that devastate the environment and societies continue unabated. Today we are faced with a challenge that calls for a shift in our thinking, so that humanity stops threatening its life-support system. We are called to assist the Earth to heal her wounds and in the process heal our own – indeed, to embrace the whole creation in all its diversity, beauty and wonder. This will happen if we see the need to revive our sense of belonging to a larger family of life, with which we have shared our evolutionary process. In the course of history, there comes a time when humanity is called to shift to a new level of consciousness, to reach a higher moral ground. A time when we have to shed our fear and give hope to each other. That time is now. - Wangari Matthai, Nobel Peace Prize Acceptance Speech
… the old Lakota was wise. He knew that man’s heart, away from nature, becomes hard; he knew that lack of respect for growing, living things soon led to lack of respect for humans too. So he kept his youth close to its softening influence. – Luther Standing Bear
My religion is kindness. – the Dalai Lama
Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever. - Mohandas K. Gandhi
Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire. - William Butler Yeats
Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least. - Goethe

If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading. - Lao Tzu
It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop. – Confucius
I see little of more importance to the future of our country and our civilization than full recognition of the place of the artist. If art is to nourish the roots of our culture, society must set the artist free to follow his vision wherever it takes him ... the highest duty of the writer, the composer, the artist is to remain true to himself and to let the chips fall where they may. In serving his vision of the truth, the artist best serves his nation. And the nation which disdains the mission of art invites the fate of Robert Frost's hired man, the fate of having "nothing to look backward to with pride, and nothing to look forward to with hope". - President John F. Kennedy, Remarks at Amherst College, October 26, 1963
Where the spirit does not work with the hand, there is no art. - Leonardo da Vinci
If you hear a voice within you say "you cannot paint," then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced. - Vincent Van Gogh
