Aung San Suu Kyi meets UK Ambassador (09/10/2009)
Foreign Secretary David Miliband welcomed the meeting between Aung San Suu Kyi and Andrew Heyn, the UK Ambassador in Rangoon, on Friday 9 October. He said:
'Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's meeting with our Ambassador in Rangoon this morning, the first in six years, is a small but welcome development. The fact that the Burmese authorities have allowed this meeting, and two meetings with a Government Minister in the last week, gives us some hope that the authorities might finally be ready to start a genuine dialogue which can lead to political reconciliation.
The Burmese people need and deserve change, and we have been clear in our support. We have consistently urged the authorities to respond, making clear the international community’s real concerns, but also our willingness in return to respond to progress.'
Andrew Heyn commented on his meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi during an interview with the BBC Radio 4 Today programme. He said:
'Aung San Suu Kyi was in remarkable form for somebody who's been through what she has been through. She was very, very engaged in the subject (Burma sanctions), very interested in going into the detail of what she wanted to talk about, and she seemed, as ever, very eloquent, and very, very engaged.
She comes across as someone with an immense optimism about her country and the people of her country. And I think the way that she has engaged for so long with her policies and her huge personal commitment, without optimism about the future of Burma I don't really think you can do that. It's an inspirational approach that she takes.'
