If we talked about Burma, we cannot leave General Aung San, architect of Burma’s National Independence as well as his daughter, Aung San Suu Kyi, our beloved leader. People of Burma voted for her party, National League for Democracy (NLD) overwhelmingly in 1990 General Election which junta still ignores to honour them.

Aung San Suu Kyi

If we look at Aung San Suu Kyi, we can see the sacrifices she has been making, the leadership she has been given and the confidence we can have on. She truly is a inspirational leader who will bring Burma towards progress, prosperous and peaceful nation. She is the leader who can unite all the diverse ethnics’ nationalities of Burma. She is the one who can turn military into truly patriotic forces rather than stooges of a bunch of corrupt Generals.

If we look at the sad side, we can see that junta put her under house arrest marginalising her from Burma democracy movement. And also so-called third forces, who changed side to junta, are targeting Aung San Suu Kyi to tarnish her image. Addition to that, some pro-junta journalists both Burmese and non-Burmese alike are attacking Aung San Suu Kyi by doing smear campaign against her.

We can see now that for being the people’s leader it is not easy for Aung San Suu Kyi as she is attacked by junta, pro-junta and so-called third forces. In addition, some pro-democracy groups are undermining Aung San Suu Kyi not knowingly, as we assume, by saying “Aung San Suu Kyi is not only Burma crisis and there are a lot of people out there dying”.

If we look at it simply, it is true to say that there are a lot of people dying. But, as part of the Burma pro-democracy movement, it would be wrong to say by putting the words which would detriment Aung San Suu Kyi image as well as at the other hand, undermining Aung San Suu Kyi’s leadership.

Worst of the worst, if we compare and say “Aung San Suu Kyi is not only Burma crisis, but also ethnics’ people are in troubled and you people don’t give attention on them”. If someone says that way, it is tantamount to creating problems for future democratic Burma since it is instigating division between people of Burma.

They are the few points we should be careful addressing Burma crisis which could lead to catastrophic consequences of future of Burma as well as falling into the junta’s trap since junta is always claiming that if they don’t rule the country, Burma would be disintegrated into pieces like former Yugoslavia. So we should be careful not to fan the flame by avoid saying tarnishing Aung San Suu Kyi image, by avoid saying which could means disintegration of the Union of Burma and by avoid commenting which could cause mistrust between people of Burma.

UNITY what our leaders said:

Bogyoke Aung San said “Of course the first thing before us is national unity. But here I want to discuss what we mean by national unity and what form it should take. By national unity, we don’t mean only unity; we mean the unity of the entire people, irrespective of race, religion, sex and sectarian and party interests, in action and not in words for national takes and objectives. As for the form this country is to take, there are some views that all parties should merge their identities completely with the national organisation. Those holding such views are genuinely concerned that the existence of parties may undermine the strength of the national movement. But we must face this question as a practical one. What is important is not exactly that they exist or do not exist but that they will engage in partisan activities detrimental to national interests. On all national questions, they should and must come together and work together without any sectarianism in the affair. In other words their role should be educative and not partisan. If this is so, the existence of parties will not be a source of weakness of our organisation. In this way we can develop dynamically to a higher and higher form of unity till we have the best we can have. This is our primary task”.

Aung San Suu Kyi said “We think that it is not only through genuine unity that we will be able to build up the future of our country”. She also emphasised that “Unity in diversity has to be the principle of those who genuinely wish to build our country into a strong nation that allows for a variety of races, languages, beliefs and cultures to flourish in peaceful and happy coexistence”.

Myo Yan Naung Thein, a prominent leader of Burma’s freedom movement who is tortured to become paralysed , a former political prisoner who is currently in prison said “United we’ll prevail. All the dictators must GO and democracy must RESTORE in Burma”.

Aung San Suu Kyi on “Importance of 1990 election results”

"Since 1992, the United Nations General Assembly has been passing resolutions on the human rights situation in Burma. But resolutions are not enough. Resolutions should be implemented. We think it is time that the international community took a greater interest in getting the terms of the resolutions implemented".

“The people bravely expressed their will in 1990, but still their will has not been recognized. The people of Burma want something very simple. They want the opportunity to be able to shape their own lives. When we fought for independence from the British before 1947, the Burmese people asked for the right to shape their own destiny. Now that we are fighting for democracy, we are asking for the same thing. We are asking for the right to shape our own destiny”.

“That the results of the 1990 General Elections must be implemented is a resolution already taken by the United Nations. We already know that the General Assembly of the United Nations has accepted the notion that the will of the people has been expressed in the 1990 General Elections. This is something we cannot abandon. It will be to the detriment of our country if after an election has been held the results are not honoured and we do not resist attempts to trivialise it”.

Aung San Suu Kyi, as the legitimate leader of Burma, she clearly gave the instruction to everyone what should be done to work to free Burma. She also expressed clearly the importance of implementing 1990 elections results. All the people of Burma should and must work collectively implementing 1990 election result, i.e. working to realise people’s true will.
