BURMA: The importance of Aung San Suu Kyi

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AHRC-STM-223-2010
November 12, 2010

A Statement by the Asian Human Rights Commission

BURMA: The importance of Aung San Suu Kyi

Yesterday, 11 November 2010, the Supreme Court of Burma rejected a special appeal against the continued detention of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the National League for Democracy, following the trespassing onto her premises of an American citizen in 2009. The Asian Human Rights Commission, among other groups, previously pointed to the contradictory, unlawful and absurd elements of the case that was brought against her and the manner in which it was conducted. The contents of the appeal and the reasons for its rejection need not be rehearsed here. It is sufficient to note that the so-called legal process was contrived, in the same manner as the pathetic electoral process last Sunday, November 7, so as to reach a desired result through a ritual performance, rather through any kind of legitimate undertaking.

Legal counsel for Aung San Suu Kyi brought the appeal as a matter of principle, since the term of her detention is anyhow due to expire tomorrow, November 13. At time of writing the military government has not made any announcement about her release. The lawyer of Aung San Suu Kyi has indicated that she will not accept any conditions being attached to it.

The anticipated release of Aung San Suu Kyi from detention will not change most things in Burma, and certainly not in the short term. Most people will continue to live in abject poverty, while a small number become increasingly wealthy through military connections, massive corruption and cronyism. Most people will continue to live in heavy fear of government officials, who can at any time make arbitrary decisions with profound consequences for their lives. Most people will continue to place more hope for change in the prospects held by a lottery ticket than a ballot paper or any other caricature of democratic political process.

However, the symbolic importance of Aung San Suu Kyi, the only prisoner of conscience in Burma who is a truly global figure, is not lost on anyone. Her captivity symbolizes the captivity of her country: the captivity of over 50 million others to the whims and dictates of army officers who have shown manifestly, time and again, that they hold office to serve only themselves and theirs. The prolongation of her unlawful detention--the latest period that she has stayed locked up is her fourth since 1989, totalling over 13 and a half years across two decades of struggle--likewise symbolizes the prolonged suffering of her country under self-centred, greedy, egotistical hypocrites.

Therefore, the release of Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest is a symbolic step that the military regime has no option but to take, since the symbolism of her release is integral to its project for conversion from uniformed dictatorship to plain-clothed pseudo-parliamentary authoritarianism. The regime must take this step before it can fulfil this project, since regional partners and groupings like the Association of Southeast Asian Nations need it to do so in order to claim that the worst is now behind and that Burma is finally moving ahead with everyone else in the region.

The unanswered and unanswerable question for the regime is whether or not it has succeeded in reducing the popular political authority of Aung San Suu Kyi to little more than symbolism, or whether she still has the capacity to excite millions not only to aspire for change but also to act for it. The Asian Human Rights Commission knows from its own work over the last decade that there is an enormous reservoir of strength and courage in the people of Burma, a reservoir which no military or authoritarian regime can locate, let alone tap. That task falls to the likes of Aung San Suu Kyi. Therefore, the AHRC looks forward to the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi not simply for its symbolic importance but because of the potential that remains deep in the people of Burma to end, at long last, the military excess, abuse and misrule that they have been forced to endure in one form or another for the last half a century.

Reports: Myanmar to release Noble laureate

(Nov. 12) -- Reports are coming out of Myanmar that the country's military rulers have signed an order to allow Aung San Suu Kyi to go free.

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate has been under house arrest in her home country for 15 out of the past 21 years. The daughter of modern Burma's founder, Suu Kyi, 65, has become a symbol of the country's struggle against military dictatorship.

In 1990 elections, her National League for Democracy party won a majority in both the parliament and in the popular vote, but Suu Kyi was already behind bars and remained there, unable to take up the post of prime minister. Myanmar didn't hold elections again for another 20 years.

Khin Maung Win, AP
Members of Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy gather Friday at the party's headquarters in Yangon, Myanmar, for the detained opposition leader's expected release.

Suu Kyi's house arrest officially expires Saturday, but rumors have swept the capital city of Yangon that she might be released as early as today. Hundreds of supporters are gathering outside her party's headquarters and at her home, outside a barbed-wire barricade, with their arms heavy with celebratory flower garlands.

At dusk, U Win Tin, co-founder of Suu Kyi's banned NLD party, appeared at a military roadblock outside the gates of her house to address supporters, The Guardian reported. He said Suu Kyi had been told she "could go this day" but that because of an impasse in negotiations, she'll likely spend one more night under house arrest.

Word of Suu Kyi's possible release comes days after Myanmar held its first elections since the disputed 1990 vote. Suu Kyi and her party were barred from participating in Sunday's elections, and state media announced that a pro-junta party won a majority in both houses of parliament.

Derided as a sham by pro-democracy advocates, the vote was nevertheless a small step toward democracy in Myanmar and was heralded as such by the military.

The vice chairman of Suu Kyi's party, Tin Oo, told The Associated Press that Myanmar's military generals have endorsed her release. "My sources tell me that the release order has been signed," Oo said. "I hope she will be released."

Suu Kyi was originally supposed to be released last year, but a bizarre case involving an American who swam across a lake to her home, claiming he was on a mission to save her, prompted military authorities to extend her detention by another 18 months, the BBC reported.

"The authorities will release her. It is certain," an unnamed government official told Agence France-Presse.

Suu Kyi's release is something international aid groups and democracy advocates have been demanding for years. President Barack Obama called for her freedom during his current trip to Asia, and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon made a similar call before Sunday's elections.

Amnesty International's Myanmar specialist, Benjamin Zawacki, told CNN that it makes "perfect sense" for the regime to free her now that elections are over and she's "no longer an electoral threat to them." But he said he believes Myanmar's military rulers will not release her unconditionally.

One demand that the country's military rulers might make is for Suu Kyi to stay out of politics altogether -- something her supporters say is out of the question.

"She has made it categorically clear that she will not accept conditions; that she will not walk out of the house with conditions," Maung Zarni, a research fellow on Myanmar at the London School of Economics, told CNN.

If and when she is freed, one of the first things Suu Kyi is expected to do is challenge the legitimacy of last weekend's elections, as well as recent changes to the constitution that strengthened the military's grip on power.

Suu Kyi is one of Myanmar's estimated 2,000 political prisoners. Formerly known as Burma, the country has been under military rule since 1962.

Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) calls for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s Unconditional Release

12 November 2010

“Here is what I want most for my people: I want the security of genuine freedom and the freedom of genuine security. I would like to see the crippling fetters of fear removed, that the people of Burma may be able to hold their heads high as free human beings. I would like to see them striving in unity and joy to build a safer, happier society for us all”. (Daw Aung San Suu Kyi)

Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) calls for the Burmese junta to release people’s leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi unconditionally.

Burma’s junta knows very well that all the justice loving people are fully supporting Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and so they used the dirty tricks in order to silence Daw Aung San Suu Kyi by repeatedly extended her detention.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s detention expired for continuous five years and regime extended another year even though under 1975 Emergency Law Section 10(b) does not allow anyone to detain more than five consecutive years. The junta was violating its own law by extending her detention period in 2008. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi completed six years of continuous detention on 27 May 2009. Since junta did not want to release Daw Aung San Suu Kyi when her 6 years detention was about to complete, junta plotted the ploy to imprison her.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi spent 15 of last 22 years under house arrest. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is not only the icon of the Burmese people's struggle for freedom but also the idol of non-violent movement in the whole world at large. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi gives us hope, confidence and faith in our aspiration for democracy.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s house arrest term will be expiry on 13 November 2010 and she must be released accordingly.

There will be protest to demand Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s release in front of the Burma’s junta embassy in London, UK on 12 November 2010 from 12:00-13:00 pm and you are cordially invited to join with us.

Is Aung San Suu Kyi still relevant?

Freedom for Aung San Suu Kyi; but is she still relevant?
Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma’s imprisoned political icon, is set to be released on Saturday, provided that Burmese officials find no other reason to keep the 65-yearold Nobel laureate under house arrest. But how relevant is “The Lady” of Burma’s democratic movement any more? Al Jazeera reporter Marwaan Macan-Markar asked that very question in an in-depth report for the news agency this week. “As Myanmar reaches a political crossroads in November, Suu Kyi’s credentials will come under scrutiny. How much power and reach would she still have to rally her followers barely a week after the south-east Asian nation’s first general election in two decades?” Macan-Markar asked, especially given that the political landscape of Burma, or Myanmar, will have changed since the last time she was freed from house arrest in May 2002. The answer? As a politic force, unknown. But as a symbol? Limitless. Opined Pascal Khoo Thwe in The Times, “If she is released, she will cause a great stir among her supporters, giving great encouragement to the movement for freedom. The last thing that the generals in the capital, Naypyidaw, want is a new era of confidence among ordinary people.”

Burma inside November 12

Yangon, November 12 -- In anticipation of the release of the democracy
icon Aung San Suu Kyi, hundreds of members of the Suu Kyi’s National
League for Democracy ( NLD ), her supporters and sympathizers together
with the journalists and diplomats from foreign embassy in Yangon came
together on the University Avenue, where Aung San Suu Kyi’s residence
lies, beginning from this afternoon.

By 5 pm the above crowds have become more than 2500. Some of the
staunch supporters of Suu Kyi came boldly bearing her photograph and
some wearing her T-shirts while two truckloads of police armed with
battle gear circled around in two police trucks nearby.

Similarly about 1000 NLD members including youths and women have
gathered at the NLD head office on Shwe gone dine road.

As the sun started setting at about 6 pm this afternoon, NLD leaders
such as Vice-President U Tin Oo
And CEC member U Win Tin went around these areas and requested their
party members to go back home peacefully and not to chant slogans.

Up to 8 pm this evening, Aung San Suu Kyi ( 66 ) has not yet been
released while most of the crowds that had gathered at the University
Avenue went home hoping that their idol would be released tonight or
tomorrow.
