The screening of ‘This Prison Where I Live’ is in conjunction with Rex Entertainment at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on Thursday, 15th September. Director Rex Bloomstein will take part in a Q&A session following the screening.

‘This Prison Where I Live’ tells the story of the political prisoner Zarganar, a fierce critic of the regime and Burma’s most popular comedian. Containing secret footage of Zarganar filmed in 2007, it is an insight into the experiences of an extraordinary man and the journey made by Bloomstein and German comedian Michael Mittermeier in their attempt to share his story with the world.
This film simultaneously explores the scale of oppression in Burma and the resilience of those who struggle against it. The comparison between two comedians from two different countries reveals the importance of democracy and freedom of speech.

A leaked U.S. diplomatic cable says Burma shipped thousands of tons of rice to North Korea in exchange for arms.
The cable was sent in July 2009 from the U.S. embassy in Rangoon and just released by the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks. It says Burma shipped about 20,000 tons of rice to North Korea through the first six months of that year in exchange for conventional arms.
The cable also quotes a well-placed business source saying the shipments had gone on for more than five years. North Korea suffers from chronic food shortages but has a sophisticated arms industry.
U.S. officials have long suspected North Korea may also be helping Burma to develop a nuclear weapons capability, though Burma denies it.
Burma's long-ruling military junta stepped down at the end of March, turning over power to a new government that was chosen in tainted elections late last year. The new administration, led mainly by retired generals, has taken modest steps to open talks with some of its critics.

We have posted a report prepared by a Shan activist, Hkun Hom, based on
information provided by the Shan State Army - North. The report describes
an attack by the Burma Army against the SSA on June 3, 2011, using what
are believed to be chemical weapons. If true, this is a war crime by
Burma’s military regime.
On June 3rd, the Burma Army launched a major attack against the SSA’s
Wanhai headquarters. The attack began with an extended artillery assault,
after which BA troops engaged in a battle with the SSA. Even though the
SSA troops were far outnumbered, the BA suffered some twenty killed in
action casualties.
Following the battle the BA removed their dead and wounded. They then
fired a short volley of mortars, four shells in total. These landed some
eighty meters from an SSA outpost. The mortars released an unusual smoke,
which drifted with the prevailing winds over the outpost. Of the SSA
soldiers located there, one died and the others suffered immediate and
debilitating health problems. They were ultimately evacuated to a hospital
in Thailand for treatment. Their blood tests revealed a number of
abnormalities, consistent across all the soldiers, but the Thai doctors
were not informed that they were the victims of a suspected chemical
weapons attack.
The SSA are calling for doctors who are proficient in this type of
medicine to review the results. They are willing to cooperate with
additional investigation.
Other gas attacks have been reported in previous years, as well as the
delivery of chemical weapon mortar shells to the Burma Army from North
Korea. The International Community should take these allegations
seriously, and act decisively to ensure that such attacks are not
repeated.
One possible explanation for the attack is obvious. The Burma Army
suffered great losses in the Wanhai battle. Their local commander decided
to retaliate. The gas mortars were purposely launched so that they would
land upwind from the SSA position, and the gas would drift over it.

United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar Tomas Ojea Quintana
Yangon, August 24 -- On the fourth day of his five-day official visit to Myanmar, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar Tomas Ojea Quintana held one and a half hour talks with democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi at her residence this afternoon.
Asked by newsmen who surrounded Quintana and Aung San Suu Kyi, the democracy icon said: “I am very much satisfied with my talks with Mr. Quintana. I look upon him as a dependable person with sincere goodwill for promotion of human rights in Myanmar.”
As for Mr. Quintana, he reserved his comments on his talks with Aung San Suu Kyi as well as on the results of his five-day mission for the press conference he will be giving tomorrow evening at the Yangon International Airport before departing Myanmar.
Since his appointment to the post of United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar in May 2008, Quintana has previously come here three times – the first time in August 2008, second time in February 2009 and the third time in February 2010.
In all these three previous visits, Quintana was barred from seeing Aung San Suu Kyi by the previous military government. Thus this is the first time Quintana has the chance to hold talks with Aung San Suu Kyi.
On arrival in Nay Pyi Taw on the first day of his visit on August 21 this year, Quintana was cordially received by Myanmar Foreign Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin.
The state media said Quintana and Wunna Maung Lwin held talks discussing progress of improvement of human rights in Myanmar.
The same day he was received by Minister for Home Affairs Lt-Gen Ko Ko, who happens to be the Chairman of the Myanmar Human Rights Committee.
On his second day of his visit on August 22, Quintana has met and separately held talks with Chief Justice U Tun Tun Oo, Attorney-General U Tun Shin, Minister for Labour U Aung Kyi, Minister for Defence Maj-Gen Hla Min.
The next day on August 23, Quintana separately met and held talks with Speaker of Pyithu Hluttaw Thura U Shwe Mann and Speaker of Amyotha Hluttaw U Khin Aung Myint. Quintana also met and held talks with chairmen of various parliamentary committees.
Political observers here commented that the way Quintana was eagerly received by the authorities of Thein Sein government contrasted with the way he was not warmly received by the previous military government.

Nay Pyi Taw, August 22 -- The visiting UN Human Right Special Rapporteur Tomas Ojea Quintana met separately with Chief Justice, Chief Attorney, Minister for Labour U Aung Kyi, Minister for Defence Maj-Gen Hla Min and five advisors of the President in Nay Pyi Taw today.
Quintana will also inspect the Hluttaw sessions tomorrow. He is due to meet with Aung San Suu Kyi on 24 August. He is scheduled to give a short press conference at the Yangon international Airport on the day of his return on August 25.
Yangon, August 22 -- The National League for Democracy this evening issued as official statement expressing full agreement with the explanations giving to the party’s Central Executive Committee ( CEC ) by General Secretary Aung San Suu Kyi on her talks with the President of the Union U Thein Sein, which took place at 4 pm on August 19 this year at the latter’s office in Presidential resident in Nay Pyi Taw.
While welcoming Thein Sein-Aung San Suu Kyi talks, the NLD statement said during the talks President and Aung San Suu Kyi had kept aside different views and had tried to find common grounds to cooperate in the interests of the nation and the people.
The NLD statement also said Aung San Suu Kyi was happy and fully satisfied with the talks.
The NLD statement also revealed that Aung San Suu Kyi had attended the National Workshop on Reform for National Economic Development on the morning of August 20 this year and had chatted with some Union ministers.
Nay Pyi Taw, August 22 -- After nearly five months adjournment, the sessions of Pyidaungsu Hluttaw ( Union Parliament ), Pyithu Hluttaw ( House of Representatives ) and Amyotha Hluttaw ( House of Nationalities ) resumed holding their sessions at the respective parliament buildings in Nay Pyi Taw this morning.
In his inaugural speech on the opening of Pyidaungsu Hluttaw, President Thein Sein stressed the importance of forging national unity for peace saying that only when peace reigns in the country further developments of the economy would be achieved.
Thein Sein in his speech threw limelight on the way his government had made efforts to achieve peace with armed forces of ethnic nationalities and with those holding differing political view.
“In the interests of the nation and the entire people, the government will continue to open the door for peace with armed ethnic national organizations, which have not yet accepted the 2008 State Constitution,” declared Thein Sein in his speech.
“Likewise, the government is exerting all its efforts to reduce the tension between the government and the above ground political groups, which have upto now not yet come to the stage of approving the 2008 State Constitution,” the President said.
“Continuing Thein Sein said his government would continue to fulfill its promises earlier given to the previous parliament that it would continue to exert all-out efforts for the emergence of good and clean government, democratic practises, the rights of the people, rule of law and also the reduction of the divide between the rich and the poor,” Thein Sein promised.
Thein Sein also revealed his government desire to take the chairmanship of ASEAN in 2014 adding that Myanmar has fulfilled all necessary requirements for that matter in the international community.

Nay Pyi Taw, August 21 -- The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, Tomás Ojea Quintana arrived Nay Pyi Taw this afternoon for his five-day fact finding mission.
This is his fourth visit to Myanmar, which will last five days up to August 25.
Appointed as Special Rapporteur by the United Nations Human Rights Council in May 2008, Quintana had come here first time in August 2008, second time in February 2009 and third time in February 2010.
“Mr. Quintana has met separately with Myanmar Foreign Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin, Minister for Home Affairs Lt-Gen Ko Ko, who is also the Chairman of Myanmar Human Rights Council, and Myanmar Deputy Police Chief in Nay Pyi Taw today,” the state-owned TV announced late tonight.

Nay Pyi Taw, August 21 -- The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, Tomás Ojea Quintana arrived Nay Pyi Taw this afternoon for his five-day fact finding mission.
This is his fourth visit to Myanmar, which will last five days up to August 25.
Appointed as Special Rapporteur by the United Nations Human Rights Council in May 2008, Quintana had come here first time in August 2008, second time in February 2009 and third time in February 2010.
“Mr. Quintana has met separately with Myanmar Foreign Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin, Minister for Home Affairs Lt-Gen Ko Ko, who is also the Chairman of Myanmar Human Rights Council, and Myanmar Deputy Police Chief in Nay Pyi Taw today,” the state-owned TV announced late tonight.
Quintana is due to meet with democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi on August 24 and he is scheduled to give a short press briefing at Yangon International Airport on the day of his return on August 25 this year.

Yangon, August 19 -- Democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi and President of the Union U Thein Sein held one-to-one talks at the President Residence in Nay Pyi Taw from 4 pm to 5 pm ( MST ) this afternoon, according to U Khun That Myint, NLD officer in charge of security of Aung San Suu Kyi.
“Following this one hour talks, Aung San Suu Kyi accompanied by U Khun Thar Myint and her personal assistant Daw Su Su Lwin met Daw Khin Khin Win, wife of the President and President’s grand daughter at the President Residence in Nay Pyi Taw,” U Khun Thar Myint told @@ adding that this fifteen minutes meeting was entirely devoted to familiarizing the democracy icon with the President family.
Khun Thar Myint described the 15-minute meeting, which he attended as “very cordial in a friendly atmosphere.”
However so Khun Thar Myint said he had no knowledge of what the President and democracy icon talked for one hour.

Burma’s president meets opposition leader Suu Kyi
Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – Burmese President Thein Sein and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi met for the first time on Friday in Naypyitaw at an unknown location, according to the local journal 7 Days.

In response to the official invitation to attend a national level Workshop on Reforming Economic Development, which is to be held in Nay Pyi Taw for three days beginning from this afternoon, democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi left for Nay Pyi Taw by government car this morning.
This will be her first visit to Nay Pyi Taw, the administrative capital of the government, ever since she was released from six years detention on November 13 last year.
Since this workshop will be attended by officials of the current government headed by President U Thein Sein, Aung San Suu Kyi will be meeting President U Thein Sein for the first time.
After inaugurating this three-day workshop, President Thein Sein is expected to hold crucial talks with Aung San Suu Kyi regarding his government’s latest initiative for achieving peace with ethnic armed organizations, with which Myanmar military is engaged in armed conflicts.
Thein Sein government yesterday evening issued a peace overture to these ethnic armed organizations inviting them to hold peace talks with the government as the current armed clashes with them have become the biggest stumbling block for the government in its pursuit of developing national economy.
It appears that Thein Sein government is trying to enlistAung San Suu Kyi’s help in bringing these ethnic armed organizations to the negotiating table.
According to NLD sources, on her trip to Nay Pyi Taw by government car Aung San Suu Kyi was accompanied by her personal assistant Daw Su Su Lwin ( daughter of NLD CEC member U Lwin ) and her chief security officer U Khun Thar Myint.
The three-day national level Workshop on Reforming Economic Development will be held in the Myanmar International Convention Centre in Nay Pyi Taw.
Three representatives from each of the 37 political parties that had contested in the 2010 election have been invited to the workshop. Quite a number of well known businessmen from each of the 14 states or regions have also been invited to attend.

Yangon, August 18 -- Income tax being paid by private enterprises engaged in CMP system ( Cutting, Making and Packing ) has been reduced from 10 per cent to 2 per cent within six months period from August 19, 2011 to February 18, 2012, the Finance and Revenue Ministry announced over the state-owned TV at 6 pm ( MST ) this evening.
Likewise, regarding the income tax of Myanmar nationals earning foreign currencies within the country or in foreign countries, the tax on their income will be reduced from 10 per cent to 2 per cent within six months period from August 19, 2011 to February 18, 2012, the TV announced quoting the order of Ministry of Finance and Revenue.
The CMP system is mostly practised by garment factories, which receive material from foreign countries. These factories are merely engaged in the work of cutting, making and packing. After that these factories got to send these packages to such countries as Republic of Korea, Taiwan etc.

New Delhi (Mizzima) – Burma’s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and a government representative, Minister Aung Kyi, on Friday agreed in a four-point statement to avoid conflicting views and to work on a reciprocal basis.
It was the second meeting this year between the minister and Suu Kyi at a government guesthouse in Rangoon.

The meeting lasted 50 minutes. After the meeting, Aung Kyi read a joint statement to reporters.
The statement's four points are:
1. Will cooperate with the government for stability and development in the country to fulfill the necessary aspirations of the people.
2. Will cooperate constructively for the flourishing of democracy in the country and better development in economic and social works.
3. Will avoid conflicting views and focus on mutual cooperation.
4. Will continue the meetings.
Responding to a reporter’s question on whether there had been real progress in the meetings, Suu Kyi said, “If there is cooperation, there must be progress in ethnic affairs and all other things including the media.”
Responding to an open letter sent by Suu Kyi to the newly formed government and ethnic armed groups calling for a nationwide cease-fire, Aung Kyi said, “This is one of the agendas under our cooperation.”
He said, “Cooperation is badly needed in our country, and it is a major issue. If we can resolve this issue, other issues will be resolved more easily.”
Aung Kyi is the minister of social welfare, relief and resettlement. He and democratic opposition leader Suu Kyi met previously on July 25. At that meeting, both sides said their talks were productive, but they did not disclose details of the meeting.
Three days after that meeting, Suu Kyi issued an open letter calling for peace between the government and ethnic armed groups. Similarly, she issued a statement on Thursday expressing her concerns over the building of Myitsone Dam on the Irrawaddy River in eastern Burma.
Burma observers said it is apparent that the government has made a decision to reach out to Suu Kyi in an effort to use her influence and prestige in connection with serious issues that face Burma, including poverty, a civil war, a stagnant economy, currency concerns, the environment and other matters.
On the other hand, some observers said the government might be trying to compromise Suu Kyi’s autonomy and soften her criticism of the government and the former military leadership.
Currently, Burma is seeking the chair of Asean for 2014 even as there are calls from the international community for a UN Commission of Inquiry to investigate charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity against the former military regime.
Among the concerns that Suu Kyi has repeatedly addressed is the immediate release of all political prisoners in Burmese jails, which now number more than 2,000 prisoners.

Le nouveau gouvernement "civil" birman a tenté vendredi d'apaiser les critiques, promettant de continuer le dialogue avec l'opposante Aung San Suu Kyi et annonçant une visite du rapporteur spécial des Nations unies.
Lors de la première conférence de presse organisée à Naypidaw depuis la dissolution de la junte fin mars, le ministre de l'Information Kyaw Hsan a espéré de "bons résultats" de la coopération avec la lauréate du prix Nobel de la paix.
Mme Suu Kyi, libérée en novembre de sept années de résidence surveillée, avait rencontré fin juillet pour la première fois un membre du nouveau gouvernement, le ministre du Travail Aung Kyi.
Une deuxième rencontre a eu lieu vendredi à Rangoun.
Dans une déclaration commune à l'issue de moins d'une heure d'entretien, ils se sont engagés à "coopérer pour la paix et la stabilité" et pour "développer le système démocratique", et à éviter des déclarations "qui peuvent mener aux conflits".
"Nous continuerons ce type de rencontres pour le bénéfice du peuple", a assuré de son côté Kyaw Hsan à une centaine de journalistes invités dans la capitale Naypyidaw, juste avant cette réunion.

Elle a en revanche testé les limites de sa liberté en effectuant début juillet son premier déplacement en dehors de Rangoun, à Bagan (centre). Ce voyage avec son fils, lors duquel elle avait attiré des admirateurs émus, avait toutefois un caractère strictement privé.
L'opposante a également annoncé pour ce dimanche son premier déplacement "politique", mais d'une seule journée, à Bago, à une centaine de kilomètres de Rangoun.
Elle a également publié une lettre ouverte au président, offrant ses services pour parvenir à un cessez-le-feu entre l'armée et des groupes ethniques rebelles dans plusieurs régions.
Vendredi, Kyaw Hsan a également évoqué en des termes exceptionnellement bienveillants la Ligue nationale pour la Démocratie (LND), le parti de Mme Suu Kyi dissous par la junte en mai 2010 pour avoir décidé de boycotter les élections décriées de novembre.
"Alors que le gouvernement lutte pour la réconciliation nationale, il apporte autant d'aide que possible à la LND", a-t-il déclaré, l'appelant à s'enregistrer légalement.
Les premières discussions de juillet entre Mme Suu Kyi et Aung Kyi avaient été saluées par les observateurs, qui avaient malgré tout douté qu'elles répondent aux demandes de mesures concrètes de la communauté internationale, qui réclame notamment la libération des plus de 2.000 prisonniers politiques.
Kyaw Hsan a d'autre part annoncé, sans donner de date, la visite prochaine de Tomas Ojea Quintana, rapporteur spécial de l'ONU pour la Birmanie.
Quintana, qui a réclamé une commission d'enquête internationale sur les violations des droits de l'Homme dans le pays, n'a pas été autorisé à y revenir depuis février 2010.

Le nouveau gouvernement "civil" birman a tenté vendredi d'apaiser les critiques, promettant de continuer le dialogue avec l'opposante Aung San Suu Kyi et annonçant une visite du rapporteur spécial des Nations unies.
Lors de la première conférence de presse organisée à Naypidaw depuis la dissolution de la junte fin mars, le ministre de l'Information Kyaw Hsan a espéré de "bons résultats" de la coopération avec la lauréate du prix Nobel de la paix.
Mme Suu Kyi, libérée en novembre de sept années de résidence surveillée, avait rencontré fin juillet pour la première fois un membre du nouveau gouvernement, le ministre du Travail Aung Kyi.
Une deuxième rencontre a eu lieu vendredi à Rangoun.
Dans une déclaration commune à l'issue de moins d'une heure d'entretien, ils se sont engagés à "coopérer pour la paix et la stabilité" et pour "développer le système démocratique", et à éviter des déclarations "qui peuvent mener aux conflits".
"Nous continuerons ce type de rencontres pour le bénéfice du peuple", a assuré de son côté Kyaw Hsan à une centaine de journalistes invités dans la capitale Naypyidaw, juste avant cette réunion.
