အမ်ဳိးသားဒီမိုကေရစီ အဖြဲ႕ခ်ဳပ္ ၏ ထုတ္ျပန္ေၾကျငာခ်က္

Global Action for Burma: Free Aung San Suu Kyi

On 6th of May, an American citizen was detained by Burmese military regime after secretly swimming across Inya Lake, Rangoon to gain access to the Nobel Laureate’s House. According to the official Burmese media, he was identified as 53-year old former military serviceman John William Yettaw of Falcon, Missouri, USA. On 13th of May, American diplomat was allowed to meet with him. Although his motives for the alleged lake exploits remain unclear, it caused the Nobel Peace Prize winner, Aung San Suu Kyi to serve jail terms under the anti-subversion laws.

Aung San Suu Kyi has spent most of the past 19 years detained in virtual isolation in her crumbing compound since the junta refused to recognize her party’s landslide victory in the country’s last election in 1990. Her last period of detention at her home expires at the end of May. This expiration of six years of house arrest, without trail or charge or even figleaf of legal respectability, was to have yanked away from the generals.

Now, due to the uninvited access to her compound by American citizen, the military generals no longer need to trouble themselves with legal niceties and it has given them a ready-made reason to imprison the most prominent political prisoner up for at least another five years. It would perfectly play into the hands of the junta if the United States of America and international community do not stand up with the People of Burma who have been oppressed by the junta for several years.

Therefore, we call upon the international community and overseas Burmese people around the world to the global action for Free Aung San Suu Kyi. Demonstrations and a number of activities will take place in different countries. We would like to encourage everyone to join with us to show solidarity and unity.

“Add your voice to a call for Free Aung San Suu Kyi”

Burma: Release of Aung San Suu Kyi and Other Political Prisoners

QUESTION: Switch to Burma? Do you have anything more to say than just that you’re troubled by the apparent charges against Aung San Suu Kyi?
MR. KELLY: Well, you know, I think I am ready to say something more than just that we’re troubled. I think that our bottom line is that she shouldn’t be under house arrest, she shouldn’t be – and even less so in prison. Our bottom line is she should be released immediately. So I’ll say that. And then Secretary Clinton, in a couple hours, as I said before, will be addressing – will have a press availability, and she’ll have more to say about it.
QUESTION: Can you tell us if there have been any contacts with the Burmese Government about this?
MR. KELLY: I do know that the Embassy in Rangoon has had contacts with the government. The initial response, of course, was to seek confirmation of the reports that we saw and also to – just to get further information on the charges. And of course, we have been constantly calling for – both publicly and privately in diplomatic channels, for the release of Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi and the other political prisoners. I understand there’s more than 2,100 political prisoners.
QUESTION: And can you say that the Embassy indeed repeated that in their contacts, other than just seeking --
MR. KELLY: I feel very confident in saying that they said something almost exactly like that.
QUESTION: Ian, do you expect that the Secretary will – I mean, that she will – unprovoked, will talk about Aung San Suu Kyi, considering the fact that she’s meeting with the Malaysian foreign minister and, you know, Malaysia plays a big part in ASEAN?
MR. KELLY: Yeah, I feel very confident that at the top of her press availability she will have some comments about this.
QUESTION: And can you say what – maybe not because the meeting hasn’t happened yet, but what you – what it is you’re looking for ASEAN to do in this case?
MR. KELLY: Well, I think in this case, of course, this has been a real concern of us for many years, and we’ve used both bilateral channels and we’ve used a number of multilateral channels. I’m not prepared to say exactly what we would ask ASEAN to do, though.
Sylvie.
QUESTION: I understand you had consular access to the guy who went into her house, John Yettaw. Can you tell us a little bit about him? And, apparently, it’s not the first time it happens. Can you confirm that?
MR. KELLY: You know, really, I think all I can confirm, because this is a private American citizen, is that he had a hearing at the prison special court. It’s the – fortunately or unfortunately named – Insein Prison in Rangoon. And this was related to his reported entry into the residence of Aung San Suu Kyi. And the Burmese authorities did grant an Embassy consular officer access to the courtroom to observe his hearing. And that’s what I’ve got.
QUESTION: And that was when? When was that hearing?
MR. KELLY: That was today.
QUESTION: Did they get to speak to him, or they were allowed out into the courtroom to observe the hearing?
MR. KELLY: I don’t know if they were able to speak to him or not. I know they were allowed into the hearing.
QUESTION: Can you tell us about the hearing and whether he was charged or anything about the proceeding?
MR. KELLY: No, I don’t have details of that, I’m afraid.
QUESTION: And is the first time this incident – these kind of things happens? Is it the first time this guy goes to Burma?
MR. KELLY: You know, I don’t – I don’t have any information on that. Sorry.
QUESTION: Has he had any problems with the law conducting protests, even in the United States? Has he done any stunt that got him into problems?
MR. KELLY: Mr. Yettaw? No, I don’t have any information on that.
QUESTION: Does he have any relation to the U.S. Government?
MR. KELLY: Not that I’m aware of.

Senior General Than Shwe
Naypidaw
Burma

Dear Senior General Than Shwe:

We are writing this public letter to call for the immediate release of the world’s only imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. Her most recent term of house arrest is scheduled to end on May 27, 2007.

On January 8, 2007, new United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on you to release Aung San Suu Kyi. May 27, 2007 affords an excellent opportunity to respond to his request.

Indeed, the UN General Assembly, former UN Commission on Human Rights, ASEAN, European Union, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Japan and many other countries have all called for Aung San Suu Kyi’s immediate release.

The 2006 UN General Assembly resolution on Burma, which passed overwhelmingly, expressed “grave concern” at the “extension of the house arrest of the General Secretary of the National League for Democracy, Aung San Suu Kyi” and strongly called upon your government to “to release all political prisoners immediately and unconditionally, including National League for Democracy leaders Aung San Suu Kyi and U Tin Oo.”

Aung San Suu Kyi is not calling for revolution in Burma , but rather peaceful, nonviolent dialogue between the military, National League for Democracy, and Burma ’s ethnic groups. The U General Assembly resolution, and 15 previous resolutions also support this approach.

We strongly urge you to respond to the United Nations and countless other countries and regional groupings around the world by releasing Aung San Suu Kyi before May 27th and committing to participate in peaceful, tripartite dialogue as outlined by the General Assembly.

Sincerely,

Signed

Anwar Ibrahim
Former Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia (1993-1998)

SINGAPORE VOICES DISMAY OVER SUU KYI’S ARREST

By Zakaria Abdul Wahab Bernama - Friday, May 15
SINGAPORE, May 15 (Bernama) -- Singapore today voiced its dismay over the Myanmar military government's action to file fresh charges against the country’s detained pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

"This is a setback for the national reconciliation process," the Foreign Affairs Ministry said of its fellow member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean).

In a statement, Singapore said it was dismayed by this latest development, and called on the Myanmar government to release Suu Kyi from detention.

The republic said it was also concerned about recent reports on the 63-year-old Nobel Peace prize winner’s poor health, and that the arrest might exacerbate Suu Kyi’s condition.

Suu Kyi was charged yesterday with violating the terms of her house arrest after an American man was caught swimming away from her lake house across Inya Lake in Yangon this month.

The Nobel Peace laureate has been under detention for over a decade now by the Myanmar authorities for breaching strict state security laws.

Daw Aung San Su Kyi Urgent Release (05!14!2009)

BDC Welcomes Mr Brown's Statement But More to Do

Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) warmly welcomes British Prime Minister Mr Gordon Brown's statement regarding justice for Aung San Suu Kyi.

“The Prime Minister said he was disturbed that Aung San Suu Kyi may be charged with breaching the terms of her home detention in Burma”.

"We would like to express our sincere appreciation over Mr Brown's brave action", said Myo Thein, Director at the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) in United Kingdom

“This is only the first step. We have a long way to go”, added Myo Thein.

We wanted to see more action. Other world leaders should follow the suit of Mr Brown.

Crisis in Burma is in pivotal state and we must take immediate actions to intervene to stop injustice in Burma.

US, EU and ASEAN governments must take action immediately on Burma.

Clock is ticking and we have no time to waste.

PM “deeply disturbed” by Aung San Suu Kyi charges

The Prime Minister said he was disturbed that Aung San Suu Kyi may be charged with breaching the terms of her home detention in Burma.

Ms Suu Kyi is facing trial for violating the terms of her house arrest and could face a prison term of up to five years.

In a statement released today, Gordon Brown called on the Burmese regime to release her and all other political prisoners.

Read the Statement

I am deeply disturbed that Aung San Suu Kyi may be charged with breaching the terms of her detention.

The Burmese regime is clearly intent on finding any pretext, no matter how tenuous, to extend her unlawful detention.

The real injustice, the real illegality, is that she is still detained in the first place.

If the 2010 elections are to have any semblance of credibility, she and all political prisoners must be freed to participate.

Only then will Burma be set on the road to real democracy, stability and prosperity.

SOS:AUNG SAN SUU KYI

Urgent Press Release

Aung San Suu Kyi is now charged and tried in the Insein prison relating to the swimmer incident which could end up at least 3 years imprisonment.

“International Community shouldn’t sit tight and just look; they must act and voice for JUSTICE for Aung San Suu Kyi and voice for Burma”, said Myo Thein, Director at the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) in United Kingdom.

UN and world leaders must demand that Aung San Suu Kyi’s house arrest mustn’t be in any case extended and junta must avoid wrongly charging her relating to swimmer incident.

“I would like to call for Mr Barack Obama, Mr Gordon Brown and Mr Ban Ki-Moon to raise your voice and call for the junta to halt any charges against Aung San Suu Kyi”, added Myo Thein.

This is a ploy. This is junta’s cunning act to imprison Aung San Suu Kyi as her 6 years house arrest would be reached on 27 May 2009. Junta wanted to lock Aung San Suu Kyi in jail forever as their rigged 2010 election plan is drawing nearer in which they are setting up everything to win their backed party.

“I couldn’t believe that three most powerful leaders of the free world are unbelievably silent”. As there is a saying in Burmese, “Silencing is agreeing”, and I become doubtful that “Is there any Justice in the world”, said Khin Maung Win, Director at the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) in United States.

Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) warned that in advance on 12 May 2009 that junta is plotting the ploy to imprison Aung San Suu Kyi. Now, the most fearful thing which we anticipated has come true.

The question is “How UN, EU, ASEAN, and International Community will take action to stop injustice going on in Burma”, added Kyaw Lin Oo, Director at the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) in Thailand.

SOS : Myo Yan Naung Thein's Health is Deteriorating

Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) expressed very seriously concerned and worried over military government denial of giving medical treatment to political prisoner Myo Yan Naung Thein who become paralysed in 2007 as the result of the severe tortured he received during interrogation. Currently Myo Yan Naung Thein is held in Than-Dwe prison which is hundreds of miles away from Rangoon, his home town.

Myo Yan Naung Thein’s health situation is worse than before and no medical treatment is received more than two months now since he complained about his deteriorating health situation.

His legs are stiff and cannot bend at all and people got to carry him for moving. This is the new development of illness build up apart from his neurological problem. He cannot sleep and eat well as the sequences he lost weight.

“I am very sad to learn that in Than-Dwe prison, there is no doctor or medics to look after prisoners. I am sure that this is regime's systematic attempt to kill political dissidents”, said Myo Thein, Director at the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) in United Kingdom.

Visiting him is very difficult for the families members due to natural barriers. By coach it takes 2 days to get there and roads are very bumpy and dangerous as it built through mountains and jungles. A ticket for the Bus is also very expensive and risky trip indeed.

“The reason why military junta sent political prisoners to remote prisons is that they are also punishing political prisoners' families”, said Khin MAung Win, Director at the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) in United States.

Myo Yan Naung Thein served 7 years in prison in 1997 due to his leadership in 1996 Students demonstrations. It is second time military regime arrested him after 2007 Saffron Revolution due to his leading role. Military regime tortured him very severely during interrogation and he becomes partially paralysed. According to the neurologist, he needs to take medication regularly and treat his illness appropriately.

"Whenever international attentions divert from these vulnerable political prisoners, they are treated very inhumanely and medical treatment are ignored" said Kyaw Lin Oo, Director at the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) in Thailand.

3 Year Sentence for Aung San Suu Kyi?

In a spirited turn of events the military junta is seeking 3 additional years of confinement for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi for accepting John Yethaw (Rangoon Swimmer) into her home last week. This reeks of set up and a total denial of Aung San Suu Kyi’s rights even as prescribed by Than Shwe. As usual Than Shwe is penciling in laws to suite his political needs in defiance of even his bogus laws. Apparently he does not realize he is only furthering the resolve of pro democracy groups and now, the general public.
Another turn of events from reliable intelligence sources within Burma is news John Yethaw may be forced to admit to lies the junta has prepared for him. Either by torture or by administering drugs it is expected John Yethaw will admit to untrue statements with regard to the intrusion of Aung San Suu Kyi’s home last week. This will raise another issue since John is an American citizen and maybe subject to cruel and unusual punishment. The military junta has shown total disregard for international laws as well as their own and will stoop to any level to obtain their objectives. Extortion and torture are standard operating procedure as well as crimes against humanity.
There is no question John Yethaw will admit to some of the most vile allegations the junta can muster. Ironically it was an unnamed member of the security force who verified that Aung San Suu Kui was not at all amused by the intrusion early in the investigation. It was the same individual who clearly noted that Aung San Suu Kyi stayed in the second floor while John was relegated to the first floor. The rumor mill from the junta has already spawned myths that this was not John’s first visitation. But by saying so makes the security force guarding Aung San Suu Kyi’s home look inept and bungling at best.
As another journalist said earlier this week; “Only Aung San Suu Kyi will know the real truth” As we all know, the military junta and its publication “The New Light of Myanmar” are nothing more than propaganda machines filled with lies and fabrications. So be prepared for more sewage from the desk of Gen. Than Shwe fore the next round will surely be filled with salacious material in an effort to disgrace Aung San Suu Kyi. This will coincide with the efforts of the military junta to place Aung San Suu Kyi in prison for 3 years. After all, this is what it’s all about, eliminating ALL opposition to the illegal 2010 election.

Hotels on Mexico's Caribbean coast on Tuesday offered free vacations for three years to any tourist catching swine flu while on holiday there, in a bid to counter swine flu's blow to the industry. Skip related content

The A(H1N1) outbreak in Mexico, from which 58 have died, has sparked mass cancelations of tourist bookings to one of the world's top tourist destinations.

"The 'flu-free guarantee' assures three years of free holidays to travelers who present flu symptoms eight days after returning from their trip," said Fernando Garcia, director of one of the participating hotel groups.

Some 5,000 hotel rooms were so far involved in the promotion which Garcia said he hoped would grow to demonstrate confidence in Mexico's beach resorts.

The hotel owners would also send letters to the US government, to be published in US newspapers, calling for a lifting of an alert against non-essential travel Mexico due to the flu epidemic.

Health Minister Jose Angel Cordova underlined Tuesday that several top Mexican beach resorts, including Cozumel on the east coast and Puerto Vallarta on the west coast, had not registered any A(H1N1) cases.

"Tourist destinations are safe in Mexico, people can return calmly, we are carrying out intensive checks," Cordova said.

But the health minister said Monday that three foreigners -- one Scot and two from the United States -- were among more than 2,000 swine flu infections identified in Mexico, including two who had been in the beach resort of Cancun.

With hotel occupancy down across the country, the swine flu crisis caused 25 hotels to close in and around Cancun, local officials said Monday.

The flu's impact, including on tourism, was expected to cost Mexico's economy around 2.3 billion dollars, around 0.3 percent of gross domestic product.

Myanmar Releases Surveillance Photo

Prior to the arrest of Mr. John William Yethaw, a surveillance camera captured this stunning photo. “Clearly this snap shot verifies CIA involvement in the intrusion of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s residence this week”, according to an unidentified Union Solidarity and Development Association official.

Statement on 33rd anniversary of NDF foundation

The ethnic national leaders have established the NDF with the aim of realizing the noble objectives of equality, self-determination and the establishment of federal union of Burma based on democracy. They have been struggling on for more than 3 decades and the 33rd Anniversary of foundation of the NDF falls on today, May 10, 2009. We, the NDF, always pay great respect and place on record the sacrifice of lives and limbs made by many heroic members of ethnic populations, resistance leaders and comrades in the course of 33 years of struggle.
In spite of pressure by the ethnic, democratic and international forces for dialogue and change through peaceful means, the SPDC military clique continues to perpetrate heinous crimes of using large scale military offensives against the innocent ethnic civilians, sowing dissension among us by various means, giving long prison terms to political, human rights and humanitarian activists, and siphoning off aid given to Cyclone Nargis victims.
We will never accept attempt by the SPDC military clique to hold election in 2010 based on the 2008 constitution, which was drafted and adopted by force in order to perpetuate the rule of evil fascist military dictatorship. On the other hand, we will continue to struggle on with higher momentum definitely, in accordance with programs, laid down at the NDF 7th Congress, of opposing the 2008 constitution and the military clique’s elections, consolidating ethnic unity and national reconciliation, and raising momentum of the just war of resistance.
It is especially necessary for us to note that the SPDC military clique is trying to disarm nefariously the ceasefire groups by pressuring them to reduce their armed strength and transform into border police force, even when there is still no political guarantee for the rights of the ethnic nationalities.
We will support politically the “Shwegondaing Statement” issued by the NLD recently as it contains a process in which the two sides can participate for finding solutions to the problems. We again call on the SPDC military clique to establish nationwide ceasefire, to unconditionally release all political prisoners including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, U Tin Oo and Khun Tun Oo, and to enter into dialogue with all political forces of the country.
In conclusion, we solemnly issue this statement and make a pledge, on the occasion of the 33rd Anniversary of the foundation of NDF, to struggle on in unity with other revolutionary and democratic forces, until the fruit of national democratic revolution is gained.

Anthony Brooke, a veteran in the Thai gem and jewellery industry, is trying really hard to alleviate the negative impact the US Tom Lantos Block Burmese JADE Act is having on local exports

Anthony Brooke, 49, deputy director for public relations of the Thai Gem and Jewellery Traders Association, is working alongside other associations and government officials to mitigate the negative impact of a US law banning Burmese gemstones on Thai exports.
A 28-year veteran in the industry with his own jewellery trading business in Thailand, Brooke says the US is currently one of the largest importers of Thai gems and jewellery, accounting for 13 to 25 per cent of total shipments over the last three years.

However, the US economic recession and recent enforcement of the Tom Lantos Block Burmese JADE (Junta's Anti-Democratic Efforts) Act has led to a 40-per-cent year-on-year plunge in Thai shipments in the first quarter of this year.

The Foreign Ministry is working closely with the association to help negotiate a review of the law, which was put into force in September last year, since it is having a negative impact on the export of Thai gems and jewellery to the American market.

"Besides the US economic recession, the export slump has been compounded by the ban on [Burmese] ruby," says Brooke, who also runs a gem and jewellery outlet in Bangkok.

Rubies and other Burmese gemstones account for about 20 per cent of the raw materials used by the Thai jewellery industry.

"There is also a big impact on employment in Thailand as many operators have had to lay off workers. Since last year, up to 100,000 people have lost their jobs, with significant losses in Mae Sot and other border towns where there used to be large numbers of gem-cutters, polishers etc," he adds.

According to Brooke, the industry in Thailand employs 1.1 million people, with more than 700,000 working in the upstream sector.

Exports of gems and jewellery totalled US$8 billion (Bt279 billion) in 2008, making the industry one of the country's top-three foreign-exchange earners.

"Though many members of our association have had to lay off staff [as a result of the export slump], they are still trying to keep as many skilled workers as possible.

"Given the Burmese-ruby ban [in the US market], there remains the negative impact on Thai exporters: there is no alternative source of raw materials yet," he says.

However, Chinese traders will gain, because they have become more active in buying rough gemstones from Burma such as rubies and jade as raw materials for domestic sales.

Brooke is concerned the European Union may also consider slapping a ban on Burmese gemstones in its vast market.

"This kind of economic sanction is similar to what the US did to Cuba, aiming for a regime change, but it has yet to see results after 47 years," he says.

In addition, the United States' Tom Lantos law is not consistent with the World Trade Organisation's provisions on the origin of products since Burmese gemstones used in Thai jewellery undergo substantial transformation and therefore should be regarded as Thai products.

In his opinion, the US law is aimed at punishing the Burmese junta but has in fact hurt underprivileged Burmese people working in the jewellery industry near the Thai border.

"Small Burmese gem-traders have decided to sell more rough gemstones to their government, which then auctions them off to foreign buyers. In other words, the ban has had an opposite effect.

"It is depressing the prices for small Burmese operators while the Chinese are gaining from the situation. Politically, the ban has pushed the Burmese regime closer to China, both economically and militarily," he says.

In coming years, however, China is expected to be the next big market for precious stones and jewellery due to its unrelenting economic growth and fast-expanding middle class. With the world's largest population at 1.3 billion, China will soon be trailing closely behind the US and European markets in terms of demand for gems and jewellery, he adds.
