People's Leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi Met 88-Generation Students' Leader Myo Yan Naung Thein

Burma’s National People’s Leader and the Leader of the National League for Democracy, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi today met with the 88-Generation Students’ Leader, Ko Myo Yan Naung Thein at the NLD Headquarter for more than one hour.

Ko Myo Yan Naung Thein is one of the founding leaders of the National Youth Network and through him Daw Aung San Suu Kyi asked two questions to the youths.

They are:
(1) WHY do you think the network is needed?
(2) HOW shall we work developing to achieve our goals?

“Daw Aung San Suu Kyi would like to know the opinions and suggestions of youths,” said Ko Myo Yan Naung Thein.

People’s Leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the 88-Generation Students’ Leader Ko Myo Yan Naung Thein discussed emphasizing on youths’ matters. They also discussed regarding current structure of National Youth Network and its future prospect.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi explained her intention of why she encourages doing network and her hopes for the youths to understand the essence of networking.

“Daw Aung San Suu Kyi urges the youths to do more to gain confidence and to build confidence through working,” said Ko Myo Yan Naung Thein.

Regarding about the increase numbers of motivated youths activists engaging in current nation’s affairs, Ko Myo Yan Naung Thein believes that it is because of the released of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi but she believes that it is due to increase in numbers of publishing journals, the use of mobile phones and the information technology which unable junta to close all the eyes and ears of the youths in Burma as well as help enlightened the youths to be more aware of current nation’s affairs.

Regarding about the youths’ capacity building programs, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said that the training are enduring at the NLD and Ko Myo Yan Naung Thein informed Daw Aung San Suu Kyi that National Youth Network would like to collaborate with National League for Democracy in that matter.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said she is happy to see increasing number of youths doing social services or/and civil society organizational works. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said that she views their works as doing politics in other forms. “Any of the humanitarian works nor civil society organizational works cannot be detached from doing politics,” she added.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi enquired Ko Myo Yan Naung Thein’s view on (recent regime’s) National Service Law which is mandatory military service in Burma. Ko Myo Yan Naung Thein replied that “It is the regime’s attempt to militarize the nation which is inappropriate and not necessary in current situation”.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and Ko Myo Yan Naung Thein discussed more than one hour regarding the youths’ education, motivation in politics, social development as well as the current political situation of Burma.

Ko Myo Yan Naung Thein is one of the prominent leaders of the 1996 Students’ demonstrations and due to his leading role; the junta imprisoned him for seven years.

Ko Myo Yan Naung Thein, Ko Min Ko Naing, and Ko Ko Ko Gyi worked together when they formed the 88-Generation Students in 2005. Ko Myo Yan Naung Thein was imprisoned again for two years after 2007 Saffron Revolution.

Since released from prison at the end of October 2009, a dedicated students’ leader Ko Myo Yan Naung Thein has been working with full determination in order to restore democracy, to promote human rights and to achieve national reconciliation in Burma.
