NCGUB'S Shopping or political tour in Indonesia?
Tuesday, 04 August 2009 16:36
Mizzima News - The NCGUB, the Burmese government in exile, will hold a meeting on 12 and 13 August, with a handful of Burmese activists in Indonesia and come up with a proposal to the military junta for national reconciliation.
The trip sounds interesting for the ones who are about to attend. It is interesting because some of its members will be on tour and even do some shopping in Indonesia. And it becomes more interesting because Dr. Thaung Tun added that it is a process which would continue in US and EU.
Pathetically, in almost 20 years, NCGUB has come up with the only plan to hold a political meeting (sic) with handpicked Burmese Community Based Organizations (CBOs).
Whatever transpires at the meeting in Indonesia is not a way out of the political imbroglio in Burma but a political show in an effort to dig out more funds from donors.
Sure enough, there will be a beautiful and well-written statement after the meeting as; release Aung San Suu Kyi and political prisoners immediately, hold talks with the opposition groups, include concerned parties in the forthcoming 2010 elections (with the quotation from the UN General Secretary). The statement will be nothing new but old calls and boring to say the least.
Instead people want to hear what and how the NCGUB and other Burmese organizations will proceed in order to solve the problems -- Burmese Army‘s oppression on the people, armed conflicts, IDPs, refugees, migrants, drugs and political prisoners.
Releasing statements, raising awareness is just part of the activities but it will not solve the current problems unless the NCGUB and other Burmese organizations look at the ground situation. People, who used to participate in these meetings, know well that most of these organizations are not functioning but a political brand in order to ask for funds.
As Dr- Thaung Tun said, it is a process, which would entail further trips to EU and US. I wonder how much money they are going to spend on this political show trips. Instead of having such meetings, why not take that fund and give it to the needy people in the IDP camps along the Thai border.
In addition to that, the NCGUB and other CBOs rarely look at the problems that people are facing on the ground.
Therefore, to have a better say in the bargaining with the Burmese regime, why does not the NCGUB invite ceasefire and non-ceasefire groups on its side in the meeting to solve the Burmese problem. The meeting should not aim at releasing statements or a shopping trip. NCGUB must come to the point, how will it work together in order fulfill the people’s expectation.

London: Protest for Aung San Suu Kyi
The verdict of her 2-month long trial was announced on Tuesday — guilty of violating security law and sentenced to 18 months of house arrest.
Protesters described the trial as illegal and unfair. They claim that it is just a way for the military regime to keep Aung San Suu Kyi out of the way during the planned 2010 election.
[Zin Zin Myo Thant, Burma Democratic Concern]:
“Actually the military regime is trying to have their 2010 election next year. So they won’t let Aung San Suu Kyi get involved in that election.”
A wave of international condemnation meets the verdict with the U.S., U.K. and France calling for global economic sanctions against the military regime.
Nevertheless, global sanctions are unlikely to work without cooperation from Burma's Asian neighbors.
[Myo Thein, Burma Democratic Concern Director]:
“If every country put humanity before profits, then the sanctions would be much more effective. Because here we are seeing only the partial sanction I must say, because it’s not a universal sanction. Because China and India they are doing the business with the illegal military regime.”
Protesters urge the U.N. Security Council for a global arms embargo against Burma.
[Myo Thein, Burma Democratic Concern Director]:
“They are calling for the United Nations Security Council to pose universal economic sanctions as well as an universal arms embargo”.
Protesters are claiming they are pressing for action rather than war and will continue to show solidarity with Aung San Suu Kyi.

Junta’s newspaper attacked on Burma Democratic Concern (BDC), FBF, UHRC & GAB.

United Nations Security Council must hold emergency meeting in order to send ultimate ultimatum demanding to free Aung San Suu Kyi
Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) calls for United Nations Security Council to hold emergency meeting in order to send ultimate ultimatum demanding to free Aung San Suu Kyi or face collective practical action taken. We call for world leaders to take concrete immediate collective actions. United Nations Security Council must take practical action on Burma. Now is the time.
International Community has been calling for military regime to release Aung San Suu Kyi but junta ignores their pleas by passing down Aung San Suu Kyi to 18 months under house arrest again. This is the junta’s cunning act which is tantamount to turning their back on dialogue and ultimately national reconciliation.
Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) warned very first in advance on 12 May 2009 that junta is plotting the ploy to imprison Aung San Suu Kyi. Now, the most fearful thing which we had anticipated has come true.
Aung San Suu Kyi once said that “It is even appropriate or justified for the international community carries out the responsibility to intervene in the internal affairs of another country whose power are creating hell for the population. The international community as a whole should recognise that it has got responsibilities. It can’t ignore grave injustices that are going on within the borders of any particular country.”
Burma crisis is in pivotal state. In Burma, there is no rule of law and junta is always above the law. Aung San Suu Kyi was elected by the citizens of Burma in the 1990 General Election. Ironically that election was conducted by the same generals who suppress Burma today. International Community must take united and coordinated action through United Nations Security Council to force junta to come to dialogue table and to free Aung San Suu Kyi along with thousands of political prisoners.

Aung San Suu Kyi verdict 'awful and illegitimate'. (11/08/2009)
Aung San Suu Kyi verdict 'awful and illegitimate'. (11/08/2009)
Foreign office Minister Ivan Lewis called the sentencing of Aung San Suu Kyi 'awful and illegitimate' and said 'we will urge our European partners to ensure EU sanctions are toughened immediately', during an interview with the BBC.
Read the transcript
Peter Dobbie (PD): Let’s get more on Aung San Suu Kyi now, she’s been sentenced to eighteen months’ house detention. Let’s talk to Ivan Lewis who works with the British Foreign Office.
Mr Lewis, can you confirm for us, because there do seem to be conflicting reports here, as to the precise series of events in the court.
Ivan Lewis (IV): Well having spoken to our Ambassador just a few moments ago what seems to have happened is that the court sentence was three years’ hard labour for Aung San Suu Kyi, a awful verdict, illegitimate as we know. The regime then moved very, very quickly to say that that would be commuted to eighteen months and it would be served in a house detention rather than any continued time in prison.
Irrespective though of the regime’s response this is a dark day for the people of
PD: What else can the international community do?
IL: Well we in
PD: Okay. Just to interrupt you for a second Mr Lewis, when you talk about sanctions granted the, the point about arms sanctions is fresh, that will take several months to get in to the area, but we’ve had sanctions before, we’ve had the ASEAN countries trying to ratchet up the pressure before, it hasn’t changed. If you or I were the Burmese military dictatorship we might say, well, so what? Do your worst, we will have the elections and she will still be under house arrest.
IL: Well let’s look at what’s happened. Even today they have responded to international opinion. Now it’s entirely unacceptable because the whole basis of the trial is illegitimate, but this regime actually does say, certainly privately to its friends, of which we are not a member clearly that sanctions do hurt, they do have an effect, they do make a difference.
But what is clear too is the rest of the world has got to step up to the mark.
So to be fatalistic and say there’s nothing we’d, we can do is not the role of Governments and leaders around the world. Britain will provide leadership but we need the support of our European and international partners and we need to send a message today, more than anything else, to Aung San Suu Kyi and the two thousand political prisoners in Burma, we’re on their side, we’re going to fight every step of the way and we will not rest until they are free and until democracy is returned to Burma.
PD: Very, very briefly Mr Lewis, is there a slightly more finessed window of opportunity for dialogue here given that we, we understand Than Shwe hadn’t really made up his mind about the sentence until twenty four or thirty six hours ago? That in his world might be the beginning of some sort of concessionary window in to which people like the
IL: Well we’ve offered this regime dialogue. We’ve talked to them about an action plan for an improvement in relations if they released Aung San Suu Kyi and the two thousand one hundred political prisoners. So when you talk about a period of reflection what that has led to is trumped up charges and a trumped up trial. This is now thirteen years that Aung San Suu Kyi has been in some form of detention or another, and this, a most recent act deliberately taken to prevent her from participating in the 2010 elections.
If this regime wants dialogue we stand ready today to have that dialogue. But let’s be clear. From the beginning those political prisoners, Aung San Suu Kyi, have to be released and the elections next year have to be free and fair. That is the international community’s condition for entering in to dialogue.
PD: Ivan Lewis, British Foreign Office Minister, thanks for talking to us here on BBC World News.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has expressed sadness and anger at the outcome of the trial of Aung San Suu Kyi and has referred to the trial as a sham. He has also called for further international sanctions against the Burmese regime.

"I am both saddened and angry at the verdict today, 11 August , following the sham trial of Aung San Suu Kyi.
The news - that she has been found guilty and sentenced to three years hard labour but that this has been “mitigated” to a suspended sentence of 1.5 years under house arrest - is further proof that the military regime in Burma is determined to act with total disregard for accepted standards of the rule of law and in defiance of international opinion.
This is a purely political sentence designed to prevent her from taking part in the regime’s planned elections next year. So long as Aung San Suu Kyi and all those political opponents imprisoned in
The façade of her prosecution is made more monstrous because its real objective is to sever her bond with the people for whom she is a beacon of hope and resistance.

The EU has agreed to impose tough new sanctions targeting the economic interests of the regime.
I also believe that the UN Security Council - whose will has been flouted - must also now respond resolutely and impose a world wide ban on the sale of arms to the regime.
My thoughts today are with Aung San Suu Kyi - the human face of

Junta's newspaper attacked on Myo Thein of Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) together with GAB, UHRC & FBF
I- Oat-Hla-Nge, logged onto the internet with my old laptop from a field since I was bored. I searched on Google wondering what funded exiled opposition groups will do since tomorrow, the government will deliver the verdict on Daw Suu Kyi (mum of the demo), relating to the case involving US citizen swimmer, Mr. John William Yettaw. Influences by pro democracy elements were futile at best.
Then out of curiosity I visited the website with a name that was neither Indian nor Burmese who wrote stories. I noticed the statement; “Global Action for Burma” and the statement were endorsed by 92 organisations. That was too many organisations.
Think my friend, Daw Suu Kyi was accused of breaking the law but there was no plot against her. Everyone loves just and right things, and respect human rights. If we want democracy, we must obey the rule of law. One needs not to worry since the Myanmar government will deliver a verdict in accordance to the rules and procedures of the existing law. Exiled opposition groups are taking this opportunity to exploit the situation by issuing statements before the verdict is read. Additionally the NLD inside Burma are dancing to the tune in accordance and in tandem with the exiled groups by issuing statements dated on 29.07.2009 saying that government will deliver the verdicts of Mae-Taw-Gyi (Daw Suu Kyi) on 31.07.2009 at 10:00 am.
No matter who issued the statements, their Maw-Taw-Gyi (Daw Suu Kyi) will inevitably be punished in accordance to the law if she is found guilty and if not, she will be freed accordingly. For the time being, she is accused of breaking the law. Therefore, calling for the accused to be released is tantamount to breaking the law as well. “Global Action for Burma”, who issued the statement, is also dancing to the tune of the NLD inside Burma in tandem since they proclaimed the “Shwe-Gone-Daing” declaration. It is obvious there is a keen relationship between these two groups.
The people who are orchestrating “Global Action for Burma” are Sai Myo Win of Union of Human Rights Council (UHRC), Shwe Zin Htun, and Dr Aye Min of Free Burma Federation (FBF) and Myo Thein of Burma Democratic Concern (BDC). These people are taking money from US donors in an effort to destabilize the peace and tranquillity of the country. Shwe Zin Htun has demonstrated more than 350 times to gain support from the US government. In addition, Sai Myo Win, who lives in Bangkok, is working to destabilize the country. According to their statements, I personally identified 33 ethnic groups together with UHRC including La-Hu and Akhar.
Now I’ve discovered there are organisations funded by the US Government intending to destabilize Burma. Their efforts are foolish since they claimed their own 7 steps road map to democracy. “Global Action for Burma” would be counterproductive for the government at the very least. It would impinge the lives of families through out Burma most negatively.
This is the junta’s newspaper article written in Burmese by the author pseudonym Oat-Hla-Nge and translated by Myo Thein.
